Urban Voices, the Cape Girardeau-based publication has become a platform for the African American communities of Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois. Originally founded in 2009 under the name Crossroad. In 2022, responding to requests for a vehicle to address the need for credible, consistent news coverage that resonates and reflects African American interests Crossroad was brought back to life as Urban Voices. This publication is more than a news source; it serves as a “virtual community center” for African Americans in Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois.
Cape Girardeau, and other communities of the area, is witnessing a steady growth in its African American population, which is leading to an increase in Black-owned businesses, community events, and cultural activities tailored to African American interests. As these communities grow, so does the need for accessible and trustworthy information.
Currently, much of the communication among community members happens through word of mouth or social media. While effective, these methods often leave gaps in reach and depth, and important issues can go unnoticed or misrepresented.
Mainstream media coverage often fails to capture the complex realities of the African American experience, sometimes unintentionally portraying stories that may reinforce stereotypes or overlook significant community contributions.
Without a dedicated platform to present a more holistic, positive, and balanced perspective, misunderstandings, and tensions can arise. This lack of representation fuels the mission of Urban Voices — to be the voice of the African American community and to provide comprehensive coverage that reflects its values, priorities, and aspirations.
The mission of Urban Voices is clear: to serve as a reliable source of information for African Americans in Cape Girardeau and the surrounding Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois areas. Its coverage spans local, state, and national news with a focus on stories often neglected by mainstream outlets. By amplifying Black voices, the publication not only addresses community concerns but also fosters pride and connection among readers.
Goals of Urban Voices:
1. To Inform: Deliver news, information, and content that reflects the African American perspective, filling gaps left by mainstream media.
2. To Connect: Serve as a communication hub for the African American experience, issues, and events, promoting unity and cultural pride.
3. To Represent: Offer fair, comprehensive portrayals of African American life and perspectives to enhance understanding and inclusivity.
By embracing these goals, Urban Voices aims to reduce misunderstandings and promote an appreciation for our region’s diversity.
Urban Voices extends beyond a traditional newspaper. It’s a movement that champions, civic engagement, and community empowerment. Through its print and digital platforms, the publication addresses issues such as education equity, healthcare access, economic opportunity, and social justice. Its vision includes transparency and accountability, providing a sustainable model for community journalism that connects rural and urban areas alike.
Urban Voices positions itself as a key partner in fostering understanding, unity, and respect across cultural lines. The need for such a platform is palpable. The African American community’s stories, struggles, and triumphs are as integral to the fabric of our region as any other groups.
By ensuring that these stories are heard, Urban Voices enhances not only African American visibility but also the community’s role in shaping the broader regional narrative.
Urban Voices is more than a newspaper; it’s a catalyst for change. Through its efforts, it aspires to build bridges within Cape Girardeau, Southeast Missouri, and Southern Illinois.
