NEWS RELEASE CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The City of Cape Girardeau announces a $1.52 million renovation project on South Sprigg Street scheduled to begin in early March 2025. The project is funded through the City’s Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) program. “South Sprigg Street and other active projects like Lexington and Cape Rock are made possible by TTF, which has been voter-approved since 1995,” said Mayor Stacy Kinder. “Every five years, the community chooses to support these kinds of projects, and those projects transform our roadways in Cape.” Most of the City’s street repair budget, and all major renovation, is funded by the half-cent tax. Fronabarger Concreters will lead the S. Sprigg St. construction work, which includes removing and replacing curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, as well as replacing deteriorated concrete street panels and completing mill and overlay work, resulting in a smooth new surface. The 104-year-old water main will also be replaced along the project length, in addition to necessary sewer repairs, to reduce the likelihood of pavement cuts for City utility repairs in the coming years. The work will start at a point just south of Southern Expressway and proceed north to a point north of Maple Street near MO 74. The project is expected to take approximately 10 months to complete, depending on weather and other factors. Residents along South Sprigg Street will be contacted directly by City mailer and Fronabarger Concreters before any work affecting their driveway access begins. “We urge all citizens to drive with extreme caution around workers on or near the roadway, be respectful on neighborhood detours, and to please be patient with us as we have more projects coming online in the coming weeks,” said Assistant City Engineer Sarah Young. Residents can subscribe to various department emails, notifications, and social media to stay alert to traffic detours at cityofcape.org/connect. TTF is a one-half of one percent (1/2 of 1%) sales tax used for street renovation and related work. The tax has been put to work in Cape Girardeau for almost 30 years. The current TTF sales tax is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2025. TTF projects are completed as revenue becomes available, and no money is borrowed to fund the work. |
