With his silky smooth, straight-from-the-heart voice, Howard Hewett is one of the most recognizable and celebrated vocalists in contemporary music. A Rolling Stone writer once praised him as “the premier vocalist in the post-Marvin Gaye era of romantic pop.”
About the Artist
Howard Hewett’s musical journey began in Akron, Ohio, where he performed gospel music as a child with his sisters in The Hewett Singers—a group promoted by his mother, the renowned gospel promoter Charlena Hewett-Brown. By his teens, Hewett was fronting R&B and funk bands, eventually heading west to Los Angeles in 1976, where his career took flight.
He soon joined a Top 40 show group, Beverly Hills, which toured extensively overseas, honing his skills as a dynamic and soulful entertainer. Upon returning to the U.S., a fateful phone call brought him to the forefront of the legendary R&B group Shalamar—where hits like “Second Time Around,” “Make That Move,” and “A Night to Remember” solidified his place in music history.
In 1986, Hewett launched a successful solo career with hits such as “I’m For Real,” “Stay,” “I Commit to Love,” and the inspirational gospel favorite “Say Amen.” He’s collaborated with music greats like Anita Baker, George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Dionne Warwick, and Kenny Loggins, and contributed to iconic movie soundtracks including Footloose and Beverly Hills Cop, earning him a Grammy Award for “Don’t Get Stopped in Beverly Hills.”
With 16 albums, over 15 million records sold, and decades of unforgettable performances, Hewett continues to thrill audiences with his voice, passion, and soulful storytelling.
