Harold S. Jones has spent a lifetime weaving creativity and community into a tapestry of transformation, with his work profoundly shaping the cultural and artistic identity of Cairo, Illinois. From a modest after-school program to a thriving hub of expression, Harold’s journey exemplifies the power of vision, persistence, and a heart committed to service. At the center of his legacy stands the Harold S. Jones Fine Arts Center, a vibrant space dedicated to fostering creativity and learning. This remarkable institution is the living embodiment of Harold’s belief: “If I can see a dream come true, so can you.”
Though Harold’s parents relocated from Cairo to Detroit before he was born, his family’s connection to the city remained unbroken. Summers spent in Cairo visiting relatives created an enduring bond, fostering a love for the town that persisted throughout Harold’s life.
Classically trained as a violinist at the University of Michigan, Harold’s exceptional talent led him to compose music scores for legendary artists such as The Dramatics, The Dells, Johnny Taylor, and several Motown artists. His multifaceted career also saw him excel as an orchestrator, teacher, and writer.
In 2009 Harold returned to Cairo to care for his aging mother. This pivotal moment reignited his connection to the town, which he came to see as both a mission field and a blank canvas for creativity. Witnessing the lack of fine arts resources in local schools and homes, Harold resolved to “stop chasing the dollar” and instead focus on his dream of enriching the community through the arts.
His vision took shape when he purchased and renovated the old Khourie Brothers/Deanna Pecord Dance Studio in downtown Cairo. Salvaging its floors and ballet bars, Harold preserved its history while transforming it into a vibrant center for artistic expression. By 2018, he officially established the Harold S. Jones Fine Arts Center as a nonprofit, offering music, art, and dance education to underserved communities in Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky, and Southeast Missouri.
The center’s walls are adorned with artwork by diverse artists, reflecting its commitment to connection, promise, and cultural enrichment. The Harold S. Jones Fine Arts Center is more than an educational space; it’s a cornerstone of community engagement. It hosts three major annual events: The Spring Arts and Crafts Fair, The Smooth Jazz on the River Festival, and The Southern Illinois Classical Music Festival. These events celebrate local talent, strengthen community ties, and provide a platform for artistic expression.
In addition to his contributions to the arts, Harold is the author of How to Be a Man of Class (2010), a guide offering wisdom on professional etiquette and social grace. He is also the owner of Insurance Research Associates, a successful claims subrogation company.
