The Corner Store, a beloved fixture at 439 Broadway in Cape Girardeau, recently received a $10,000 grant from Main Street America in partnership with American Express. With these funds, owners Robert and Mary Gentry have made significant improvements, enhancing both the look and offerings of their long-standing business.
On Monday, October 14, the Gentrys hosted a long-overdue ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the national recognition and their 18 years of service to the Cape Girardeau community. The event drew local officials, chamber members, and enthusiastic community supporters, who came to congratulate the couple on their milestone and the upgrades made possible by the grant.

The Gentrys were among 500 small-business owners across the country selected for the Backing Small Businesses grant program, designed to support local entrepreneurs. Robert Gentry acknowledged the invaluable assistance of the Multicultural Business Alliance, crediting the organization for first making him aware of the grant opportunity and then guiding him through the grant application process. Their support, he said, was instrumental in helping The Corner Store secure the funding.

Since being awarded the grant in June, the Gentrys have invested in several key improvements to their store. New signage now brightly marks the store’s location, complemented by the installation of energy-efficient LED lighting. The Gentrys also upgraded their storefront with a vibrant red door, inviting customers into a fresh, revitalized space.
Inside, The Corner Store now boasts an expanded inventory that includes a new souvenir stand, additional food products, and everyday essentials.

Known for offering fresh lunches, canned goods, and sweet treats, the store continues to maintain its nostalgic charm, reminiscent of the classic mom-and-pop shops of years past.
“When you’re fortunate to get a grant like this, one of the first things you think about is your inventory,” said Robert Gentry. “Buying inventory today is better than waiting for tomorrow because prices just keep going up.”
The grant has helped the Gentrys not only improve their store’s appearance but also ensure that they can continue to provide a variety of products to their loyal customers. After nearly two decades in business, The Corner Store remains a cornerstone of the community, embracing the future while preserving the charm of the past.
