The Shawnee Park Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, was decked out and filled to capacity as the Cape Girardeau Branch of the NAACP hosted its highly anticipated Annual Freedom Fund Dinner. This gathering drew attendees from all across Southeast Missouri, uniting community members to support the NAACP’s mission, network with peers, and honor the remarkable achievements of local business leaders and educators.

Dr. William A. Cooper, born and raised in Hayti, Missouri, is a proud graduate of Hayti High School and an inspiring example of what can be achieved through dedication, education, and perseverance. In his address, Dr. Cooper shared personal stories and scripture, emphasizing the importance of purpose and resilience in the face of challenges. His career includes roles as the founding Medical Director of Cardiovascular Surgery at WellStar Health Systems in Marietta, Georgia, and Associate Professor of Surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, adding to an extensive list of accomplishments that reflects his commitment to service and excellence.
The evening’s awards ceremony honored several esteemed individuals for their impactful contributions. Micquanita DuBoise received the Dr. Edward Spicer Excellence in Education Award acknowledging her dedication to education and community service. Theresa Taylor was recognized with the Regional Teacher of the Year Award, celebrating her dedication to students and education. Karen Graham was honored with the Distinguished Service in Health Care Award for her contributions to health and wellness. Charles “Chuck” Reid received the Precision Force Award, Roshunda Robinson was celebrated with the Mary Warfield Beauty Icon Award, and Rick James recognized for his valuable contributions to the community.
