S.N.A.P. VBS: A Week of Learning, Fun, and Superpowers

Hooked on Books is an innovative reading program developed and curated by Women In Action, a diverse community committee composed of members from various churches and organizations.
This dynamic program is hosted by St. James and In His Image Ministries, but its roots and inspiration come from the collective vision and creativity of Women In Action.

By uniting community members through a shared love of reading, Hooked on Books fosters a vibrant environment for discussion, learning, and connection.

From August 5-9, 2024, the S.N.A.P Kids Grow Club hosted its annual Vacation Bible School (VBS) at Second Missionary Baptist Church, and the event was nothing short of extraordinary. With the theme “God’s Super Heroes,” the program aimed to empower young minds by teaching them about the “Superpowers” of Courage, Friendship, Faith, Forgiveness, and Trust. Each evening, the church buzzed with the laughter and excitement of over 100 children as they engaged in crafts and outdoor activities, all while learning valuable life lessons.

The success of this year’s VBS was a testament to the strength and unity of the community. Volunteers played a critical role in making the week memorable for the children. Special thanks go to Ramona Bailey and the members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, who dedicated their time and energy to the kids. The kitchen was kept running smoothly by two exceptional cooks, Melva Seyer and Edna Patterson, whose delicious meals fueled the young superheroes. Meanwhile, the men and women of Second Baptist ensured that everything ran seamlessly, from grilling burgers to organizing activities.
St. James A.M.E. Church also played a vital role, with Pastor Genevia Allen-Patterson, Deborah Mitchell-Braxton, Stephanie Fraction, and Apostle Deborah Young contributing their leadership and support. The logistical backbone of the event was provided by Mission Minded, which offered shuttle bus services every night, ensuring that every child had the opportunity to attend. A special shout-out goes to Marvin McBride for his unwavering commitment to the cause.

The week was more than just a series of activities; it was a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared purpose. As the summer program draws to a close, S.N.A.P is already looking forward to the fall, eager to continue the mission of guiding and inspiring the next generation.
But the work is far from over. The S.N.A.P Kids Grow Club is calling for more volunteers to help carry on this vital mission. If you are passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people and want to be part of this incredible community effort, please reach out to Ms. Felice Patton at 573-270-9903 to sign up for the fall program. Together, we can keep showing our kids how to succeed and become the heroes they were meant to be.
