Criminal action of any type will not be tolerated in Cape Girardeau. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, and I encourage our great County Prosecutor to prosecute any culprits to the fullest extent allowable.

On Sunday, May 19, 2024, at 2:33 p.m., the Cape Girardeau Police Department received multiple calls regarding gunfire inside the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.

School Resource Officers with the Cape Girardeau Public School District were on-scene for high school graduation and were quickly able to detain a person of interest and render aid to two victims.

Officers with the Cape Girardeau Police Department, Southeast Missouri State University Department of Public Safety, Cape Girardeau Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Jackson Police Department, and ATF responded to the scene to assist in building security and crowd control.

The two victims were transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

On May 20, 2024, the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Kris E. Owens, age 20 of Cape Girardeau with the Class A felony Assault in the first degree, the unclassified felony of Armed Criminal Action, and Class E felony of Unlawful Use of a Weapon regarding the May 19th shooting at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.
